The Garden

One warm palette, from the garden to the grill

Rust-toned cedar and ipe carry through the whole yard: the planter beds, the fire table base, the kitchen cabinets and the slatted screens. Against dark-stained fencing and pale concrete pavers, they give a narrow back garden a calm, modern rhythm, with a lounge for evenings and a bar for long dinners.

Chapter 1 · The Side Garden

A narrow garden that still has room to breathe

A long cedar planter edge runs beside the house, with climbing vines on trellis above it. Wide, pale stepping stones cross a clean strip of lawn between layered planting and the dark fence, leading the eye toward the kitchen at the far end.

Chapter 2 · The Fire Lounge

A gas fire table at the heart of the patio

Off the sliding doors, a long gas fire table sits in front of a built-in ipe bench, with a raised stucco planter of grasses behind it. Herringbone and large-format pavers define the seating area, and a soft strip of light under the bench makes it glow after dark.

Chapter 3 · The Outdoor Kitchen

A stone-topped kitchen made for company

A built-in grill, ceramic cooker, sink and under-counter fridge sit in ipe-clad cabinets with a stone countertop. A waterfall-edge bar with four white stools faces the garden, and slatted cedar screens give the cooking area privacy without closing it in.
