The Garden

Pavers, timber and a clean line of light

The house is crisp white with black windows, so the garden keeps to a short palette: pale grey pavers, warm hardwood decking and dark steel. A lit stepped wall closes the far end of the lawn, and after dark the hedge and steps carry the design.

Chapter 1 · Terraces & Paving

Pavers that run the length of the house

Large grey pavers run along the back of the house and out toward a stepped, planted wall. The lawn is held in by clean concrete edges, and a small tiled seating spot under the oak catches the afternoon sun.

Chapter 2 · Pergola & Shade

A dark pergola and a porch swing

Chapter 3 · Fire Feature

A fire table to end the evening

A low rectangular concrete fire table sits at the heart of the deck, with lounge chairs set around it. At dusk the flame, the glow from the steps and the lit hedge turn the corner into the warmest spot in the garden.

Chapter 4 · After Dark

Up-lights, step lights and string lights

The tall hedge is lit from below, each stair has a low recessed light and the old oak wears a net of string lights. The result is a long, even glow that shows the shape of the yard without glare.
