The Garden

A pergola, a stone-clad kitchen and a garden made for twilight

A white pergola over a deck anchors the back of the house, with a stone-clad kitchen island at its center. Large-format paving, a curved lawn and gravel beds of grasses, agave and boulders run around it. Low path lights and uplit shrubs carry the garden into the evening.

Chapter 1 · The Terraces

Paving, lawn and gravel beds

Large pale paving slabs sweep around a curved lawn, with flagstone stepping stones leading into gravel beds of grasses, agave and boulders. A narrower run of square slabs becomes a path along the dark fence, lit by low mushroom-style path lights.

Chapter 2 · The Pergola

A pergola over the deck

A white louvered pergola shades a deck wrapped around the house, with string lights and wall lights overhead. Under it sit a long bar-height counter, lounge chairs and a sectional, all within a few steps of the kitchen doors.

Chapter 3 · The Outdoor Kitchen

Stone-clad counter and bar

The kitchen island is faced in dark stacked stone and topped with veined white counters, with a built-in grill, sink and refrigerator under the pergola. A window from the indoor kitchen looks onto the counter, which carries on as a long bar.

Chapter 4 · The Evening

Warm light and firelight after dark

A covered fire table with deep woven chairs sets up a seating area off the deck, with a lit garden behind. Path lights, spotlights in the planting and a glowing planter wall show off the texture of the beds and the small trees. The garden reads as clearly at night as it does at dusk.
