A new modern house given one open lawn, a louvered pergola kitchen and a long white fire table.

The Garden

One lawn, three rooms

Behind a clean-lined modern house, the garden is a single open lawn with each use set around its edge. A louvered pergola shelters the kitchen on a grey paver terrace, a raised timber deck holds a seat and a spa, and a white concrete fire table sits in the grass between them. Wide concrete stepping pads and string lights tie the three together.

Chapter 1 · Terraces & Paving

Grey pavers and concrete stepping pads

Grey pavers lay out the kitchen terrace and a wide landing outside the house. Long concrete pads step across the lawn with a strip of turf between each, leading from the paving out to the garden. Dark mulched beds, young trees and low path lights frame the edges.

Chapter 2 · The Outdoor Kitchen

A stone island under the louvers

The kitchen is a long white stucco island with a veined stone counter, built-in grill, side burner, stainless doors and drawers, and a pizza oven on top. It runs the full width of the pergola so the cook is always under cover. At night the louvers glow from strip lights set into the beams.

Chapter 3 · Fire Feature

A long white fire table in the grass

Out on the lawn, a rectangular white concrete fire table sits between two deep white sofas, facing the kitchen. In daylight it reads as a clean white block against the turf, and at dusk the flame becomes the focal point. It is the one place in the garden with nothing overhead.

Chapter 4 · After Dark

String lights, step lights and glowing louvers

Festoon lights cross the whole garden and strip lights wash the underside of the pergola. Small lights set into the deck risers show the steps, and path lights run along the stepping pads. Together they make one soft, even glow rather than a few bright spots.
