The Garden

A warm courtyard in pale stone

Every outdoor room here is laid in the same warm-grey paving, from the front driveway to the back terrace. In the back, a white louvered pergola, a covered dining patio and a fire table are set around a square of turf. A stacked stone wall with a bubbling basalt fountain finishes one end, and lighting in the walls and fences warms it all at night.

Chapter 1 · Arrival

Paving that carries all the way round

From above, the front garden is a square of turf with a round bed of stones and succulents at its centre, set between the driveway and entry path. Rows of river rock and young trees run along both sides. After dark, lights along the paving and in the beds draw the same pattern in gold.

Chapter 2 · Pergola & Shade

A white louvered pergola over the fire table

At the back, a white louvered pergola covers a lounge of low sofas and a square fire table with a bed of blue glass. A stacked-stone wall and a stepped planter sit behind it, with a wood fence above. A covered dining patio next door gives the family a second place to sit out of the sun.

Chapter 3 · Terraces & Paving

One courtyard seen from above

From the air the layout is clear: a turf strip with a bare tree at one end, a dining set on the paving, and the white pergola tucked into one corner. Warm lights run the full length of the walls and the edges of the paving, so the pattern shows even at night.

Chapter 4 · After Dark

Light in the wall, water in the stone

A stacked-stone wall, backlit by small lights in its cap, carries a bubbling fountain of three tall basalt columns, planted around with blue fescue. Uplights pick out the fence and the climbing plants above it. Under the covered patio, string lights and a warm glow make an easy place for a long dinner.
